SEO in Dalmatia, Croatia in 2026: what it costs, how long it takes and how Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik differ

A salon owner in Vodice, a repair service in Split and a holiday rental on Brač do not need the same SEO. They share one thing: the customer asks Google first, and Google shows three businesses on the map and about ten links below them. This guide explains what SEO means for a business in Dalmatia, what it costs, when results appear and what you can do yourself before paying anyone.

SEO in Dalmatia: Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Makarska, Dubrovnik and the islands

In short

  • SEO in Dalmatia has three parts: a technically sound website, a page for every service and place, and a Google Business Profile with reviews.
  • With us the audit and technical foundations start from €490 + VAT one-off, and monthly content work from €350 + VAT.
  • Technical fixes show an effect in four to eight weeks, new content in three to six months, and competitive searches in Split or Zadar in six to twelve.
  • For seasonal businesses SEO is done in autumn and winter, because the page must be on Google before guests start searching.
  • Nobody can guarantee first place. What can be guaranteed is the work that gets done and a report showing what it brought.

What makes SEO in Dalmatia different

Google's rules are the same in Zagreb and in Vodice. The market is different, and with it what is worth spending time on.

  • The season. Some searches only exist from May to September: boat rental, excursions, restaurants, apartments. A page started in June reaches Google as the season ends.
  • Two markets on one site. Local customers search in Croatian, guests in English or German. These are not translations of the same text but different searches with different questions.
  • The map decides more than the list. For "hairdresser Šibenik" or "air conditioning service Split" Google first shows three businesses on the map. Whoever is not among them gets the leftovers.
  • Small towns, weak competition. In Tribunj, Primošten or Pirovac often nobody has a proper page for their service. First place there does not take a year of work.
  • One town is not enough. A tradesman from Vodice also works in Šibenik, Tisno and Murter. Google does not know you are there until your site says so.

From Zadar to Dubrovnik: how hard is it where

The table is our assessment from working with local businesses, not official statistics. Use it as a guide to how strong the competition is and where to focus in each area.

AreaCompetition on GoogleWhat people search for mostWhere to focus
Split and surroundingsStrongYear-round services, healthcare, beauty, repairs, real estateNarrower searches by neighbourhood and service, reviews, site speed
ZadarStrongServices, hospitality, excursions, vehicle and boat rentalA page per service, an English version, Google profile
ŠibenikMediumTrades, clinics, restaurants, trips to Krka and the KornatiLocal pages for Šibenik and nearby towns
Vodice, Tribunj, PrimoštenWeak to mediumAccommodation, restaurants, wellness, boat rental, home servicesSeasonal searches in two languages, the map
Makarska RivieraMedium, strong in summerAccommodation, excursions, restaurants, rafting on the CetinaContent published before the season, foreign languages
DubrovnikVery strong in tourismTours, transfers, accommodation, restaurantsNarrow topics where you really are the best, English content
Islands (Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Vis)Weak for local servicesVehicle and boat rental, accommodation, wineries, tradesmenA simple fast site and a complete Google profile

The rule that follows: the bigger the city, the narrower the search has to be. "Dentist Split" is a hard fight. "Children's dentist Split Mertojak" is a job for a few months.

The three parts of SEO

1. Technical foundations

Google must be able to open and read the page quickly. That means loading in under two and a half seconds on a phone, correct titles and descriptions, one address per page, a sitemap, business data in a form Google understands, and a page that does not slide sideways on a phone. This is done once and checked from time to time. More on how we build such sites is on the Web design page.

2. Content: one page per service and per place

Google does not show a business, it shows the page that best answers the question. If you offer five services in three towns and have one "Services" page, Google has nothing to show for "massage Vodice" or "massage Šibenik". So you build one page for each service, one for each place you work in, and articles that answer the questions customers really ask: price, duration, differences, what is included.

3. Google Business Profile and reviews

For local searches the map profile brings more calls than the website. What matters is the right category, services, opening hours, photos of real work and reviews you reply to. Profile and website must show the same name, address and phone. Details are on the Google Business Profile and local SEO page.

What SEO costs

SEO is paid in two parts, because these are two different jobs.

PartWhat it includesHow it is paidOur price
Audit and foundationsSite review, search research, technical fixes, a plan of pages by service and placeOne-offfrom €490 + VAT
Monthly workNew pages and articles, improving existing ones, tracking positions and enquiries, a monthly reportMonthly, no long-term contractfrom €350 + VAT

Three things affect the price most: how many services and places you cover, how many languages you need and how strong the competition is. A tradesman in Tribunj with three services needs less work than a clinic in Split with fifteen. All our prices, with and without VAT, are published in the price list, and what goes into the price of the website itself is explained in the guide How much a website costs in Croatia.

Offers under a hundred euros a month almost always mean an automatic report and no work on the site. That does no harm, but it does not help either.

When results appear

PeriodWhat is doneWhat to expect
Month oneAudit, technical fixes, a tidy Google profileA faster site, correct data on Google
Months two and threePages for services and places, first articlesPages enter Google, first positions for narrow searches
Months four to sixRefining content from the data, reviewsMeasurably more calls and enquiries from search
Months six to twelveExpanding to harder searches and new placesPositions for competitive searches in larger cities

An example from our own site: our guide to the anchor price rule was published at the end of September 2026, and in its first month the Croatian version appears on the first page of Google for "sidrena cijena", with an average position of 8 according to Search Console. The topic was new and competition weak, so it went quickly. For "SEO Split" the same road would take months.

If you live off the season, count backwards. A page that should bring enquiries in May must be published by February, which means it is discussed in October or November.

What you can do yourself, for free

  • Open or claim your Google Business Profile and fill in everything: category, services, opening hours, description, photos.
  • Ask ten happy customers for a review and reply to each one.
  • Check that your website shows the same name, address and phone as the profile.
  • Open your site on a phone: does it load quickly, is the phone number visible without searching, can you call with one tap.
  • Type your service and your town into Google. Write down who is in the top three on the map and what they have that you do not.
  • Add your site to the free Google Search Console to see which searches bring people to you.

If you do that, you are already ahead of most local businesses. An agency makes sense when you need pages for several services and places, content in foreign languages, or tracking that shows which channel brings the work.

What to check when choosing an agency

  • A first-place guarantee is a warning sign. Google decides positions, not the agency.
  • Ask for a list of what will be done each month, not just a list of keywords.
  • Ask what is measured. Visits are not a result. Calls, enquiries and bookings are.
  • The website, domain, Google profile and Search Console must be in your name.
  • Check the agency's own website: is it fast, can it be found on Google, does it publish prices.
  • A one-year contract with no exit suits the agency, not you.

How we do it

We start with a free audit: we look at your website, your Google profile and the three strongest competitors in your town, and tell you what is worth doing and what is not. Work is charged at a fixed price from a written proposal, the monthly part is cancelled with one month's notice, and every month you get a report with calls and enquiries, not just visits. See what that looks like in practice on the Results page, and the service description on the SEO page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost for a small business in Dalmatia?

With us the one-off audit and technical foundations start from €490 + VAT, and monthly content and tracking work from €350 + VAT. The exact amount depends on the number of services, places and languages, and you get it in a written proposal before we start.

Do you do SEO for businesses outside Vodice and Šibenik?

Yes. We work with businesses across Dalmatia, from Zadar to Dubrovnik and on the islands, in the rest of Croatia and in Austria. The work is done online and by phone, so distance is not an obstacle.

Do I need SEO if I already pay for Google Ads?

Ads bring visits while you pay, SEO also afterwards. They work best together: ads show which searches bring business, and SEO builds lasting pages for those searches. For seasonal businesses ads cover the peak and SEO the base.

Is a Google Business Profile enough without a website?

For one service in one town a profile can bring calls on its own. As soon as you have several services, several places or foreign guests, you need a website, because a profile cannot answer every search.

How long do I have to pay for SEO?

We recommend at least six months, because the result adds up: every new page joins the previous ones. After that some clients keep expanding content and some move to occasional maintenance. What has been built stays yours.
