How much Google Ads costs in Croatia for a small business (2026): cost per click, budget and cost per inquiry
“How much should I give Google?” is the question we hear most from tradespeople, clinics and small offices. There is no fixed amount, but there is a way to work it out before you spend a single euro. This guide explains how Google charges for ads, what a click roughly costs in Croatia by industry and what budget makes sense for a local business.
In short
- Google Ads has no minimum spend and no contract. You pay only when someone clicks your ad, and you set the daily budget yourself.
- For most local industries in Croatia a click costs roughly €0.30 to €2.50. These are estimates; the real price depends on competition, location, season and ad quality.
- A sensible starting point for a local business is around €300 a month in ad spend. Less than that rarely gives you enough data to decide anything.
- The number that matters is not the cost per click but the cost per inquiry: budget divided by cost per click, multiplied by the share of visitors who get in touch.
- We set up campaigns from €590 + VAT, with monthly management from €290 + VAT; the ad budget, from €300, you pay directly to Google.
How Google charges for ads
Google Ads is an auction. Every time someone searches, Google decides in a fraction of a second which ads to show and in what order. The highest bidder does not automatically win.
Ad position depends on two things: your bid, the most you are willing to pay for a click, and your Quality Score. Quality Score is Google’s rating from 1 to 10 based on three things: how likely people are to click the ad, how well the ad matches the search and how good the page it leads to is.
- You pay per click (CPC, cost per click). An ad shown without a click costs nothing.
- The actual cost per click is usually lower than your maximum bid. You pay roughly what it takes to beat the ad below you.
- A better ad pays less. A business with a good Quality Score can rank above a competitor and still pay less per click.
- There is no minimum. You can set a daily budget of €5. On some days Google may spend up to twice your daily budget, but over a month never more than the daily budget times 30.4.
- You can stop at any time. Pause the campaign with one click and from that moment you pay nothing.
What a click costs by industry
The table below is a rough estimate. We put it together from Google Keyword Planner data and from what we see on campaigns in Dalmatia. It is not a price list. The same search in Split and in Pirovac, in March and in July, can cost very different amounts.
| Industry | Example search | Estimated cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| Local trades | “plumber Šibenik”, “AC service Vodice” | €0.30 to €1.20 |
| Clinics and dentists | “dentist Zadar”, “dental implants price” | €0.50 to €2.00 |
| Lawyers and accountants | “lawyer Split”, “accountant for a sole trader” | €0.60 to €2.50 |
| Real estate | “house for sale Vodice”, “real estate agency” | €0.30 to €1.50 |
| Tourism and apartments | “apartment Vodice”, “Ferienwohnung Primošten” in season | €0.40 to €2.00 |
| Online shops | product searches, Shopping ads | €0.10 to €0.60 |
Two notes. First, prices in Croatia are still lower than in Germany or Austria, but the gap is narrowing, especially for English and German searches. There you compete with foreign agencies, hotel chains and booking platforms. Second, in small towns often only one or two businesses in your field advertise, so a click can cost even less than the lower end of the table.
What budget makes sense
Google will never tell you your budget is too small. Whether advertising pays off is something you have to judge yourself. Our rule for local businesses is at least €300 a month in ad spend, roughly €10 a day.
That is not because Google asks for it. It is about data. With €300 and a click of around €1 you get about 300 visits a month. That is enough to see which searches bring calls and which only burn money. With €100 a month you get about a hundred clicks, and after a month you still do not know whether the campaign works or you were just lucky.
- €300 to €500: one service, one to three towns, one Search campaign.
- €500 to €1,000: several services or towns, a separate ad group for each service.
- Over €1,000: makes sense only once you know your cost per inquiry and have capacity for more work.
The budget does not have to be the same every month. A tradesman who is fully booked until the end of June can scale ads down or pause them, then turn them back up when work is needed.
Working out the cost per inquiry
Cost per click on its own tells you little. What matters is what one call or inquiry costs you, and what the job it brings is worth. Here is how to work it out:
- Divide the budget by the cost per click. That gives you the number of visits.
- Multiply the visits by the conversion rate, the share of visitors who call or send an inquiry. For a well-built landing page for a local service this is often 5 to 10%; for a weak page, 1 to 2%.
- Divide the budget by the number of inquiries. That is your cost per inquiry.
- Compare it with the value of a job. How many inquiries turn into work, and how much do you earn on that work?
An example with round numbers, for illustration only: an air conditioning service spends €300 a month and a click costs €1 on average. That is 300 visits. If 6% of visitors get in touch, that is 18 inquiries, or about €17 per inquiry. If one in three inquiries becomes an installation or service call, the business gets six jobs for €300 of ads. Whether that is good depends on the margin per job. For an AC installation it usually is; for a small repair it may not be.
This calculation also shows where the biggest lever is. If the page turns 6% of visitors into inquiries instead of 2%, the same budget brings three times as many calls. That is why our ads always come with a landing page that sells and conversion tracking; otherwise nobody knows what an inquiry really costs.
Seasonality in Dalmatia
Demand in Dalmatia is not flat across the year, and neither is the cost per click.
- Tourism and apartments: English and German searches start growing in January, when people plan their holidays, and peak from May to August. Competition is fiercest at the peak, so clicks can get more expensive.
- AC service and installation: demand is highest from April to June, before the first heat. Start advertising in July and you are late.
- Building work and trades: many owners of houses and apartments look for tradespeople in autumn and winter, when the guests have gone and there is time for work.
- Clinics, lawyers, accountants: demand is steadier, with peaks around filing deadlines and at the start of the year.
A good campaign follows the season. The budget rises a few weeks before the peak and falls when there is enough work, instead of the same amount running every month.
Which campaign type to choose
| Type | Where it shows | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Above and below the regular Google results | Almost every local service. You see exactly which searches you pay for. |
| Performance Max | Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, partner sites | Online shops with a product feed and businesses with larger budgets. Less control over where the money goes. |
| Ads on Google Maps | At the top of the map and in Maps results | Businesses whose Google Business Profile is linked to the ads account, through a location asset. |
| Call asset | A call button next to a Search ad on mobile | Urgent services where the customer wants to call now: plumber, locksmith, towing. |
Our advice for a small local business is simple: start with a Search campaign, tightly targeted to the towns you actually serve, with call and location assets. Only once it brings inquiries at an acceptable cost does it make sense to try Performance Max or other formats.
Ads on Maps do not replace a free Google Business Profile; they add to it. If your profile is not in order yet, start there. We explain how in How to get on Google Maps in Croatia. For long-term, free visits from Google, see also SEO in Dalmatia.
The costs people talk about less
- Campaign management. If you do not run it yourself, an agency charges for setup and monthly management. Check whether the fee is fixed or a percentage of spend, and whether you pay the ad budget directly to Google.
- A landing page. An ad that leads to a home page with no clear offer and no call button wastes money. A good service page is a one-off cost that lowers the price of every inquiry.
- Conversion tracking. Without tracking calls and forms you do not know what works. Setting it up takes a few hours, but without it every decision is a guess.
- VAT. For businesses in Croatia, Google usually invoices through Google Ireland Limited. VAT-registered companies that enter their VAT number generally receive invoices without VAT and account for it themselves under the reverse charge. If you are not VAT-registered or are unsure, ask your accountant before the first payment.
Google often offers new advertisers promotional credit: spend a certain amount in the first weeks and you get extra ad credit. Amounts and conditions vary by country and change often, so check them in your own account before you launch. It is a welcome bonus, but not a reason to rush the setup.
Five mistakes that eat your budget
- Broad match without negative keywords. An ad for “AC service” also shows for “AC service jobs”, “how to clean my AC myself” and “AC unit manual”. You pay for every one of those clicks.
- The ad leads to the home page. Someone looking for dental implants does not want to hunt for that service through a menu. The ad must lead to a page for exactly that service.
- No call tracking. Most local customers call rather than write. If calls are not recorded, the campaign looks worse than it is, or better.
- The Display Network left on. When you create a new Search campaign, Google switches on showing ads on other websites by default. Clicks there are cheap but rarely bring inquiries. For a local service, switch it off.
- Targeting all of Croatia. A tradesman from Vodice does not need clicks from Osijek. Target only the towns you actually travel to, and show ads to people who are there, not to people merely interested in the place.
How we do it and what it costs
We start with one Search campaign for the service that earns you the most and the towns you serve. We set up negative keywords, call and location assets, call and form tracking and, if needed, a landing page. For the first few weeks we check the search terms daily, then weekly.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Campaign setup with conversion tracking | from €590 + VAT, one-off |
| Monthly management with weekly optimisation and a report | from €290 + VAT |
| Ad budget | from €300 a month, paid directly to Google |

Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?
No. Google asks for no minimum spend and no contract, and you can pause a campaign whenever you like. For a local business we still recommend at least €300 a month, because with less it is hard to see what brings inquiries.
Do I pay when my ad is only shown?
Not with Search campaigns. You pay only when someone clicks the ad or taps the call button. Impressions without a click are free.
How quickly does Google Ads bring the first inquiries?
Ads can start showing the same or the next day after approval. The first inquiries often arrive in the first week, but a campaign needs two to four weeks to weed out irrelevant searches and settle the cost per inquiry.
Is Google Ads better than SEO?
They are not either-or. Ads bring calls right away and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes months but does not charge per click. For many local businesses the best approach is to start with ads while building the website and Google profile alongside.
Can I run Google Ads myself?
You can, and for a simple local campaign it is doable. Take time to add negative keywords, switch off the Display Network, target only your towns and set up call tracking. Skip those steps and the money you save on management easily goes on bad clicks.
